Consuming Bacteria Can Be Good For You: Flora Manufacturing and Distributing Ltd. Introduces Latest Line Extension for Udo's Choice Probiotics

Vancouver, BC - Flora Manufacturing and Distributing Ltd. in an ongoing effort to produce quality health supplements unveiled its latest product line extension today. Four, age-specific probiotics under the Udo's Choice product line has been added to two existing therapeutic blends.

Probiotics are the "good" or "friendly" bacteria that are the normal inhabitants of the intestinal tract. Although the word bacteria is usually associated with germs and illness, probiotics are beneficial as they help to enhance the immune system. They favourably alter the gut microecology and prevent unfriendly organisms from gaining a foothold in the body. Environmental and lifestyle factors can decrease the number of good bacteria which may lead to problems such as excessive gas, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, and poor absorption of nutrients.

All of the new, age-specific blends are formulated to provide the most appropriate strength and strains of bacteria to reflect the healthy microflora of individuals in each age group. The new probiotics are available in the following four formulas:

•    Infants Blend
Containing 2 billion viable cells with 7 strains of infant-specific bacteria per gram, this blend addresses diarrhea, children's diseases and bacterial infections.

•    Children's Blend
Containing 4 billion viable cells with 8 strains of child-specific bacteria per capsule, this blend addresses children's diseases, bacterial infections and diarrhea.

•    Adult's Blend
With 12 billion viable cells and 8 strains of adult-specific bacteria per capsule, this blend is formulated specifically to address bacterial infections, cholesterol levels, diarrhea and abnormal cell division.

•    Advanced Adult's Blend
With 24 billion viable cells and 9 strains of specific bacteria per capsule, this blend is formulated to address conditions commonly associated with seniors, such as lower bowel conditions (including constipation and diarrhea), abnormal cell division, bacterial infections and cholesterol levels.

The four age-specific products join an existing therapeutic line of Udo's Choice probiotics. The two, existing therapeutic blends are:

•    Super 5
Containing 1 billion viable cells, this unique, raspberry flavoured lozenge includes 5 bacterial strains. Formulated specifically with L. salivarius to improve the health of the mouth, gums and throat, this blend can be used to address thrush, gum conditions, tooth decay and bad breath.

•    Super 8
Containing 30 billion viable cells and 8 specific strains per capsule to improve yeast overgrowth, Super 8 is formulated specifically with a higher percentage and concentration of L. acidophilus to address yeast imbalance & leaky gut syndrome.

"After researching the supplement market, we saw the urgent need for probiotics that reflect the health needs of all Canadians. We concluded that it was necessary to have multiple formulas in order to satisfy the needs of the entire age spectrum" says Ken Cowan, category manager for Flora.

All six Udo's Choice Probiotics are available exclusively to quality health food stores across Canada. The national rollout of the four new formulas will commence on December 16, 2002.
